A book signing is a great way to meet readers face-to-face, but it is also a way to sell your book. If the signing is held in a bookstore, as many are, customers can purchase a copy of the book and have it signed by the author. What a great opportunity! Be prepared, though, for periods of waiting for the next person to want your book signed. Big-name authors draw big crowds. Your draw probably won’t be as great as Stephen King or J.K. Rowling; whose is, after all? Remember, though, always be pleasant and cheerful with your readers. Good impressions go a long way, but poor impressions go way farther. Ask a question or two of each reader. What was her favorite scene? Which character did he like best? Take a genuine interest in your readers.
The publisher will undertake various marketing schemes in addition to book signings. However, as the author, be willing to explore opportunities to promote your book beyond what the publisher undertakes. Social media and author and book websites are common ways for an author to reach out directly to readers and to engage in marketing beyond what the publisher can do. As an author, be engaged in the marketing of your work. You’re proud of the book; show it and help sell the book.
